Self-Contained vs. Stationary Compactors: Which One Do You Need?

Two machines dominate the commercial compactor market, and choosing between them is the most common question we get at Norton Equipment. The good news: the answer is usually decided by one property of your trash, whether it is wet.

The mechanical difference

A stationary compactor is two pieces: a compaction unit anchored to your pad, and a detachable receiver container it pushes waste into. When the container fills, the hauler pulls it, dumps it, and drops it back, the compactor never leaves.

A self-contained compactor is one piece: compactor and container welded into a single sealed, leak-tight body. When it is full, the whole machine is hauled to the landfill, emptied, and returned to your pad.

That one design difference, detachable vs. sealed, drives everything else.

Why wet waste settles it

Compacting wet waste squeezes liquid out. In a stationary compactor's receiver container, that liquid finds the container door seams and ends up on your pad, your lot, and the road behind the hauler's truck. It smells, it stains, it draws pests, and it gets you written up.

The self-contained unit exists precisely to solve this: fully welded seams and liquid retention keep every drop inside until the machine is emptied. This is why grocery stores, restaurants, hospitals, hotels, and food processors run self-contained almost without exception, and why health-conscious inspectors like seeing them.

If your waste stream is genuinely dry (cardboard, packaging, plastics, paper, floor trash) the stationary unit's economics win: the machine itself is cheaper, receiver containers are bigger, and swapping a container is faster than hauling a whole machine.

Cost and logistics, side by side

  • Purchase price: Stationary units generally run cheaper for equivalent capacity; self-contained units carry the cost of the sealed container built into every machine.
  • Hauling: Stationary receiver boxes (30-40 yd) haul more per pull than most self-contained units (15-35 yd), so high-volume dry operations pull ahead further.
  • Downtime at pickup: With a stationary unit and a spare container, you never stop feeding. A self-contained site is without its machine during the haul cycle, usually fine, worth planning for.
  • Site cleanliness: Self-contained wins outright for anything moist. No contest.

By industry

  • Grocery & supermarkets: Self-contained. Produce, deli, and dairy waste guarantee liquid. (Pair with a vertical baler for cardboard, the classic two-machine back room.)
  • Restaurants & food service: Self-contained, sized modestly or shared across a center.
  • Hospitals & care facilities: Self-contained for general waste streams with food service.
  • Warehouses & DCs: Stationary, almost always: the waste is packaging, and volume is king.
  • Manufacturers: Stationary for dry scrap; pre-crusher if bulky items dominate; self-contained only for wet process waste.
  • Retail: Stationary compactors, with balers taking the cardboard.

The mixed-stream trap

The expensive mistake we see: a "mostly dry" operation buys stationary, then discovers that the 10% wet fraction (break-room waste, damaged product, that one department) leaks exactly like 100% wet waste. If any meaningful wet fraction exists, either separate the streams (small self-contained or sealed containers for the wet, stationary for the dry) or go self-contained for the whole stream.
